Adult Faith Formation assists in the ongoing conversion of Adult Catholics and facilitates the entry into full communion of the Church for the non-baptized, those baptized in other Christian faiths, as well as those Catholics who need to complete their sacraments of initiation be it Eucharist and/or Confirmation.
Adult Formation promotes mature adult faith: the faith of the disciple saved by Christ’s redemptive love and continually converted to him.
It fosters this discipleship by providing a “comprehensive and systematic presentation and exploration of the core elements of Catholic faith and practice — a complete initiation into a Catholic way of life.” (Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us no. 65)
What is the Goal of Faith Formation?
Adult Faith Formation seeks to enable adults to gradually transform their lives by adopting an attitude of “conversion to the Lord.” This attitude helps the Christian take on the mind of Christ, trust in the Father’s love, accept the Spirit’s guidance in searching out and obeying God’s will, and seek the holiness of life within the Church.
It fosters a baptismal spirituality in which faith in Jesus is continuously deepened through participation in the sacraments, the works of charity and justice, and the Church's prayer life.
Formation for adults helps them to make a conscious and firm decision to live the gift and choice of faith through membership in the Christian community.
It promotes active participation in the Church as she is realized in families, the parish, small faith communities, and the communion of saints.
It allows adults to develop a deeper sense of their cooperation with the Holy Spirit for the mission of the Church.
It enables adult disciples to accept their rightful place in the Church’s mission to evangelize, to hear the cry for justice, to promote unity among Christians, and to bear witness to the salvation won by Jesus Christ for all.
